All throughout my path to becoming a K-12 classroom teacher, I was confronted with “evidence,” “evidence-based practices,” and the “science” behind how kids learn. Most of it could be considered Eurocentric monoculture laced with eugenic themes. Most of this lines up with what Italian historian Umberto Eco referred to as ur-fascism’s (eternal fascism’s) cult of tradition and rejection of modernism. The idea that, in Eco’s words, “There can be no advancement of learning,” because “truth has been already spelled out once and for all.” Whilst Eco was talking about so-called classical education, the same can be said about public education in general and special education in particular. This rejection of what happens to be staring us all in the face is what has motivated me to write my next book - this time on lifting the literacy of non-verbal populations.
This article from the Jacobin highlights the many problems seen in public education in America as the various camps fight over who will profit from public education’s demise.
