This article explores the many options available to states and districts in developing, attracting, and retaining talented educators in hard-to-fill positions.
Speaking for my journey to the classroom, there are a variety of factors at work in California. The biggest one in Los Angeles is the low entry salary. New teachers here make about half of what is needed to afford a two bedroom apartment at the city’s average price. Depending on where the school is located, rents nearby are cost prohibitive. Plus, public transport in LA is effectively useless. Solutions are out there, but it’s going to take radical change.
