Does telemedicine offer hope in speeding up access to diagnoses?

A recent article in SpectrumNews illustrates a few examples of families being able to access health care providers via videoconference app to speed up their access to their health plan’s diagnostic team for the purposes of diagnostic screening. The government’s response to the pandemic, along with technology, has proven the lie to the old way of doing business - that one had to be physically present at the doctor’s office to receive services. That accessibility that we had been demanding for so many years, that we were told was not possible, suddenly become possible when the pandemic’s restrictions on movement and gatherings began to eat into the capitalist health care system’s profits.
Though the preliminary evidence of this practice is promising, it is still too soon to say whether tele-health and other new strategies can make a meaningful dent in the wait time for autism evaluations. It’s also dependent on the health plan’s choosing to go this route (some just shut down services until the pandemic restrictions were over). Also, those in rural / low income areas with limited internet services might not be able to access services, even if. the local health plan offers them.
