Creating a Gradeless Class in a School That Requires Grades?

This year, as a Special Education teacher who hosts a reading development class, I embraced the so-called “mastery grading” model. Or, as my district calls it, Equity Grading and Instruction (EGI). Before you wig out, let me explain.
I was able to boost engagement and growth by letting the students direct the creation of the learning goals and standards, using rubrics to review and guide the revision of each other’s work. This is no different than how the trades work in training and developing new workers. In this way, it’s not truly “gradeless,” but rather student-driven in the assigning of grades for each assignment. Just as Journeymen across the trades know, one grows in the knowledge of their trade as they lead and critique the work of others. This is similar, as well, to the “see one, do one, teach one” model.
What do you think? Would you trust your students to drive their learning?
