Amid educator shortage, Minnesota bill endangers thousands of special ed, rural and tech teachers

I read this article from the Minnesota Post with great interest. It seems that Big Ed has gone after Minnesota’s alternative pathway to becoming a classroom teacher. You see, my employer has a very similar pathway. It runs its own teacher training program. Many of the District’s SPED RSPs are either currently in the program or graduates.
I was weary of this pathway early on. I went through a college-based teacher prep program as part of my AmeriCorps service commitment. My college transcript and EdTPA are portable and can cross state lines. My employer’s program is not.
Big Ed doesn’t like this type of on the job training. There’s no evidence that such programs are sub-standard. There’s tons of evidence that they are fit for purpose in training teachers to competency within local contexts.
Pay attention to such moves around the country. Given Big Ed’s lobby, they likely felt that Minnesota was the place to begin this move. One success emboldens lobbyists to try it again elsewhere.
