For years, I’ve been asking “where’s the evidence?” in so-called evidence-based strategies. In doing research for an upcoming book, I came across this amazing “minority view” document from NIH’s National Reading Panel Publications. The document was written in 2000 by Joanne Yatvin, Ph.D., of the Oregon Trail School District in Sandy, Oregon.
“… it seems reasonable to infer that Congress’s goal was to settle the “Reading Wars,” putting an end to the inflated rhetoric, partisan lobbying, and uninformed decision making that have been so widespread and so detrimental to the progress of reading instruction in America’s schools …“ noted Dr. Yatvin. Sadly, her “minority view” reads like prophecy.
