So I Did a Thing: The Uniquely Human Podcast
Episode 154: Part 3 of 3 Series Insights from the Lived Experience of an Autistic Gestalt Processor - with Dr. Jaime Hoerricks
I was recently on the Uniquely Human podcast, and I’ll be honest—it was a little surreal. A bit nerve-wracking, a bit full-on fan-girl, because yes… I was sitting there talking with Dr Barry Prizant. That Dr Barry Prizant.
It was intense in the best way—deeply meaningful, a little overwhelming, and genuinely wonderful. Barry and Jess were both incredibly gracious, thoughtful, and accommodating of my access needs, and I felt so welcomed in the conversation. I’m very grateful to them both for making space for me, and for the chance to speak about gestalt processing, teaching, and the kinds of understanding our students deserve.
Show Notes: “Barry and Jess Texeira have a discussion with Dr. Jaime Hoerricks, a special education teacher and author who shared her experiences as an autistic gestalt processor. Jamie explained how her holistic, relationship-based approach to teaching has helped improve outcomes for her students, particularly those who process language and information in a gestalt manner. She emphasized the importance of understanding and supporting students’ unique ways of learning and communicating, rather than trying to fit them into traditional academic molds. The discussion also touched on the challenges faced by gestalt processors, including trauma and misdiagnosis, as well as the need for more inclusive and supportive educational practices.”
